Kimball Library News 4/17/12

Why do hummingbirds hum? Because they don’t know the words! Why don’t hummingbirds come to my yard? That has a more serious answer. Mike McDermott, owner of Wild Birds Unlimited in Plaistow, will give a presentation on local birds in your backyard at the Kimball Library in May on Monday the 7th from 6:30-8:00pm. This time of year the birds are busy building nests and laying eggs. Pick up some tips on how to attract them to your yard. Mike will focus on the arrival of hummingbirds which begins in early May. Registration is not required and refreshments will be served.

Why is our ‘Book Babies’ class so popular? Take one enthusiastic leader named Jessica, take one committed caregiver, take one infant child through age 2, and combine it with an award winning program. The Mother Goose on the Loose is a lap-sit storytime for the little ones – infancy through two years old. This award-winning program takes place on Mondays from 10:30-11:00am. The readings combine music, movement, visual literacy and language development to help children get ready to read. We are changing the name from ‘Book Babies’ to “Mother Goose on the Loose” just so people familiar with the curriculum will recognize it and be sure to join us. The next new session begins on Monday, May 7th, but we allow folks to join as long as we have space mid-session. We are currently taking registrations but this is filling up quickly so don’t snooze and lose!

Why go outside your local community if you can get top-notch programs and classes right at your local library? Children ages three to five, and their caregivers, are welcome to join us for some early music-development activities at ‘Music and Me! Our time will be spent in circle-dancing, call-and-response songs, rhythmic stories, and percussion activities. Our focus will be music, but our activities will also teach socialization and early literacy skills. Come join the fun starting on Monday, May 7th! These classes are from 11:30 to noon on Mondays. *This is a 5 week program to run: 5/7/12 - 6/11/12. Registration is required.

Why do children love crafts? We will let you answer that one, but by the attendance in the “Create and Express Classes” on Thursdays we just know they do! Join Judy, resident artisan, and get ready for those beautiful spring and summer gardens! We will be painting wooden garden signs. This is a two week class for children in grades 2 and up taking place on Thursdays (May 10 and 17th) from 4-5pm. Registration is required and this class will fill. This is a firm two week commitment.
